Geld was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma last December, and Daniel has stopped working to take care of him, but "neither of us knew it would happen so soon," he added. "He is the kindest, most generous and most caring person," Daniels wrote in tribute to his "rock" and his partner of 30 years.

Geld is also a veteran stage actor. His main roles in RSC include Antonio in The Merchant of Venice and the Duke of Clarence in Richard.
His death triggered the mourning of the whole industry. Richard E. Grant, the star of Withnail & I, told Daniels on Instagram that he was "deeply sorry for the great loss of your beloved Ian", that RSC remembered "one of the kindest and gentlest people in this industry", and that Russell T. Davies, the host of Doctor Who, was "pleasant and interesting".
